Steelers GM hints team could select QB in 2024 NFL Draft

The Steelers have completely rebuilt their quarterback room this offseason by signing Russell Wilson and Kyle Allen in free agency and trading for the Bears' Justin Fields.

However, none are currently under contract past the 2024 season, so general manager Omar Khan is not ruling out adding another quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft.

"There's some good players and I wouldn't close the door on anything," Khan told reporters. "If there's an opportunity to improve that room, we'll look at it, but like you said, we've got three guys who are on one-year deals, and we have to be open to it."

Pittsburgh is scheduled to make its first selection at No. 20 in the first round, but Khan said quarterback is unlikely to be the pick there with several other needs that still need addressing.

"I'd say it's not realistic that we'd take a quarterback in Round 1, if that's what you're asking, no," Khan added.

The Steelers will likely select a center, wide receiver, offensive tackle and cornerback before potentially taking a quarterback. So, a late-round flier makes the most sense for Pittsburgh, which has two sixth-round picks (Nos. 178 and 195).

Two quarterback prospects projected to be late-round selections are Florida State's Jordan Travis and Tennessee's Joe Milton III.

Travis suffered a season-ending leg injury late in the 2023 season but still finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting. He'd likely be drafted much higher if it weren't for his injury.

Milton III, on the other hand, has a huge arm but battles inaccuracy.

"He's got shades of Cam Newton based on his ability — but his football acumen and his accuracy are issues," a scout told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. "Just doesn't have the feel for the game or the position that you'd like to see."

The Steelers may opt to add a fourth quarterback as an undrafted free agent, but if they don't love who's left on the board in the sixth round, Khan could take a chance on Travis or Milton III.
