The Tennessee Titans have work to do this offseason. After firing head coach Mike Vrabel and hiring Brian Callahan to replace him, Titans fans are eager to see which direction the team goes in the NFL Draft. Now, there appears to be a report linking the Titans to one of the most controversial NFL Draft prospects.
Who is Tennessee meeting? Why is this player controversial? Read below to find out those answers and more.
According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Tennessee Titans are planning to meet with Texas Longhorns DT T’Vondre Sweat. It is safe to say that this defensive tackle has made headlines for more than just his contributions to the Texas Longhorns. Unfortunately, he got into some trouble off of the field.
Yesterday, it was reported that T’Vondre Sweat was arrested due to driving while intoxicated. However, he has more risks now than just a criminal record. This little incident could end up costing Sweat a lot of money.
That is because Sweat was projected to be a first-round draft pick before his arrest. However, this is very likely to change now that teams are likely to be wary of him.
So, where do the Titans fit in all of this? Right now, their first pick is the seventh overall pick in the NFL Draft. However, despite planning on meeting with Swift, it would be very shocking if the Titans took him with that pick.
What can they do? Well, one option they have is to trade down in the first round to try to collect additional draft picks. Or they can use a later draft pick to try and draft Swift. Right now, Tennessee has the 38th overall pick and the 106th overall draft pick.
Tennessee does have limited draft capital in the early rounds. So, it is plausible that they could trade down to collect more draft capital and get Swift at a discount.
If a player gets selected in the first round of the NFL Draft, they can make nearly $40 million on their rookie contract. However, even if they only fall to the second round, they are unlikely to make $10 million on their rookie contract. In theory, Swift driving while intoxicated was not only a poor decision on the road but also in his future wallet.
