As we continue to look at each position group preview for the Wisconsin Badgers, we conclude the offensive side of the ball with the offensive line. Like the running backs, I think this is a strong group with a good mix of veterans and young studs waiting in line. I think this group is one of the best in the Big Ten. Here’s how I think the depth chart plays out to start the season.
I don’t think there’s much debate with this at all. It will be interesting to see how Jack Nelson adjusts after playing mostly guard last season. However, Nelson is the best lineman on this team. He’s a versatile player and can play multiple positions. Most Badger lineman can play multiple positions as well.
I did not expect Tyler Beach to return for another year, but I’m glad he did. He only makes this unit stronger. You could make the argument this is the best line in the Big Ten.
The biggest question is Logan Brown. He made it through an entire spring for the first time and I think he will get every chance to win this job and keep it. The former five star recruit hasn’t been what we thought we would because of injuries. He has one more shot an im rooting for him.
If anyone in this second unit has a chance to start, I think it’s Riley Mahlmann. He’s an absolute stud, and I think he will give Logan Brown fits in fall camp. I think Brown initially wins the job, but don’t be surprised if Mahlmann is potentially the starter by the end of the year. He’s that good.
I think Badger fans will get to see Nolan Rucci and Trey Wedig get meaningful snaps as well. Rucci is a five star recruit and a monster get for the Badgers. Expect both players to be starters next year.
Not only am I exited about the starting line, I might be more exited about the young trio of Rucci, Wedig and Mahlmann. There’s potential Wisconsin could lose four staters after this year. Paul Chryst loves to use multiple lineman in a rotation. As a result, these young players will play. It will just be a matter of how much.
